The Cushing Cemetery is a privately owned historic burial ground and when it was discovered that the fence surrounding the property contained lead-based paint, they needed to take action to protect their visitors.
Notable memorials in the Cushing Cemetery include:
Gideon Barstow US Congressman. He was elected as a Democrat to represent Massachusetts' 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1821 to 1823. This is a cenotaph memorial located within his parent's lot.
Wilson Barstow, Jr. Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as 1st Lieutenant in Company E, 37th New York Volunteer Infantry, then as a Captain and Aide-de-Camp on the staff of Major General John A. Dix. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "efficient and meritorious services during the war".
Challenge:
The cemetery was established in 1806 and maintenance has become increasingly expensive, according to the Cemetery Commission, the cemetery was originally owned by the town, but was taken over by a private group in the early 20th century, so any expense to maintain the cemetery is a decision that must be considered based on budget.
Why ECOBOND® - LeadDefender® Was Selected Over Other Available Products:
I needed to repair and paint a very large and ornate fence at a local cemetery and I had to get smart about lead paint. I also needed to keep our overall cost of this project down because of funding.
I went online and started to get information about products that just covered the lead paint, products that encapsulated the lead paint and products that rendered the lead paint harmless. It was a learning experience.
After reviewing all of the information I went with Ecobond for one reason only. It makes the lead paint safe to work with. I can sand it, scrape it, paint over it, I had no limitations to what I could do. Our project is almost 50% complete and I’m very pleased at our progress and the way our fence is looking. And I don’t have to worry about the lead paint 20 years from now when it needs painting again.
I am very pleased at the way the paint goes on and covers the fence. The water cleanup is a huge plus also. Our biggest problem is working around New England weather, but even at cool temperatures the paint flows well.
A lot of people have been asking questions about the product that I’m using and I’ve been explaining what it is and how it works. Great product, I like the way it works, I’d recommend it for any lead paint project.
