When Should I Use Lead Defender®?

Lead is an element and cannot be destroyed by any product; LeadDefender® is tested using EPA test methods to be effective at treating lead; providing for improved safety and environmental protection. Under Federal, state, and some local requirements; residential lead paint hazard reduction can be achieved through either:

  • Abatement defined as a permanent elimination of lead-based paint hazards including removal or permanent containment or encapsulation of lead-based paint

Or

  • Interim Control defined as to reduce temporarily human exposure or likely exposure to lead-based paint hazards including specialized cleaning, repairs, maintenance, painting, temporary containment.[42 USC Chapter 63A – Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction 01/03/2012 (112-90)]

LeadDefender® is generally acceptable for use as an interim control measure for interior or exterior lead paint projects when a non-permanent residential lead paint hazard action is undertaken. Additionally, its use during renovation, repair or prior to removal is also typically allowed; we recommend you verify requirements with your state or local regulatory agency.

LeadDefender® is beneficial for sealing or treating lead dust or lead in lead paint; this includes as a “Paint it on, Leave it on” sealant or for application prior to either the components removal and disposal or prior to lead paint stripping/removal.

Encapsulation or permanent lead paint hazard reduction

LeadDefender® is not a residential encapsulant as defined by Federal or state residential standards as a warrantied 20 year encapsulant and LeadDefender® is not a permanent action as defined by residential abatement standards; however, in most instances, its use will be allowable as an interim control measure. LeadDefender®’s ability to seal and treat lead dust and lead in paint during interim control actions is not permanent and is limited by surface conditions of the lead paint hazard surface. LeadDefender® is effective for typically 10 years under normal use and maintenance.
